Examples include the 11th century Great Zimbabwe and the other 200 mortarless wall cities throughout Southern Africa as well as the Benin Bronzes created from the 13th century in the Benin Empire (present-day Nigeria). Textile weaving also flourished due to patronage by kings, chiefs, and other royals and aristocrats for ceremonial occasions such as birth, marriage, and funerals. In Nigeria, the ancient city of Kano was known for its highly developed textile industry and indigo dyeing-pits. In Central Africa, the Bamileke bought beads to decorate thrones and ceremonial clothing thereby enhancing their importance. External influences, particularly religion, also impacted design across Africa. In East Africa, cotton was introduced by Arabs in Ethiopia which spurred cotton-growing and weaving industries to turn cotton into textiles.

New Cultures in Afrocentric Architecture: CPDI Africa Pedagogy

For too long, the continent has been treated and viewed as ‘other’, with its design heritage seen through the lenses of curiosity and craft, rather than as an equal and valued contingent of the design world at large. We raise questions about the future and innovative solutions to development issues.

Emergence of African design has a way back to its origin of cave paintings and carvings. And the first of any was found in the Apollo 11 cave in Namibia, which dated back to around 23,000 BCE. Human beings through ages have been much interested in art and it evolved through paintings and carvings which started in caves and was brought to refinement through emergence of culture and identity. African Style of art and design also evolved through its evolution of culture and shaped into its own unique Identity.

In ancient Egypt, hieroglyphics served not only as a means of written communication but also as a source of aesthetic embellishment, extending beyond mere wall adornments. The Pedestal + Duniake seat was designed to showcase fabrics by Toghal, a UK brand that produces African-inspired homewares. Produced as a limited edition, it features a moulded birch plywood base with an architectural form topped by two cylindrical bolsters, called duniake. These are upholstered in a printed fabric designed by Nairobi-born artist Phoebe Boswell. Based in Springfield, Virginia, Ethiopian-American designer Jomo Tariku of Jomo Furniture infuses his work with African art and culture. The height-adjustable Boraatii stool, which can also serve as a table, is inspired by headrests used in the Oromia region of Ethiopia, which are used to protect elaborate hairstyles at night.

The Asanka coffee table is topped with an asanka - a wide, shallow clay bowl traditionally used to grind and blend food in west Africa. The base is made of stacked wooden disks based on the form of the Adinkrahene, which is regarded as the most important of all the Adinkra symbols. Tailoring a traditional pattern to fit your brand’s unique identity can be a game-changer. This might involve altering the scale, color, or form of a pattern to better align with your brand’s personality. For example, if your brand is all about innovation, you could take a traditional pattern and give it a modern twist, using digital effects or unconventional color schemes. This custom approach results in a logo that is both distinctive and deeply rooted in African culture.

By Nature Vibes, we mean the nature of Africa, which is still being preserved. Starting from a beautiful stretch of beach, forests that are still of good quality, and there are also traditional clothes that will be a plus for African logo design. The simplest solution for this design approach is to first determine what field your brand, company, and services are in. So if you do deeper research, the logo development must be able to match the interests of your brand from the start. This will help interest and excite customers, as well as encourage significant African logo brand growth. Fonts are also always a special consideration that designers must keep in mind.
